A report by the commission indicates that there are still labour and skill shortages and examines potential solutions

Although the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused an economic downturn in the second half of 2022, the Commission’s Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE) report 2023 demonstrates that EU labour markets in 2022 have shown extraordinary resilience. In real terms, the EU economy expanded by 3.5% in 2022. With 213.7 million people working and unemployment rates at a historic low 6.2% in 2022, employment rates were at a record high of 74.6%.

The low presence of some groups on the job market, such as women or people with disabilities, is still a problem, the survey concludes. Although it decreased from 16.7% in 2021 to 14.5% in 2022, youth unemployment is still a significant problem.
