The French government is proposing changes to immigration laws that would provide foreigners a new residency permit in order to fill skills gaps and allow some asylum seekers to rapidly enter the labour.
The draught legislation, which will be submitted to Parliament in early 2023, aims to strike a compromise between the demands of the work market and voter concerns about identification, integration, and security, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and work Minister Olivier Dussopt, who spoke to Le Figaro. According to Dussopt, the bill demonstrated the “pragmatism and realism” of the government. Although it is a particularly touchy matter in France, the revision comes at a time when other European nations are also relaxing immigration laws to address strains on the employment market.
